Lens Baby - Andrew Rousey

Rousey Photography News and Rants

Lensbaby Velvet 56

This lens, as far as I have seen, has a lot of fans and probably an equal amount of detractors. I have had the recent pleasure of trying one out for myself and I can say that, in my opinion, this is going to be one of the most fun, and potentially useful lenses that I could add to my kit.

This lens adds a wonderful macro, that really gives me the option to get super close, super soft milky images, as well as getting super sharp images if I so choose. So far I am loving the lens' softer side. I have a couple of different macro lenses, and I love them all, but this one might just get the most use of all of them.

What is really nice, is that you can back off, stop it down to F5.6 or so, and you have a really stunning portrait lens or even general walk around lens. This is what makes it so wonderful too me. To have the ability to focus down to 5 inches, or pull back and get sharp images at standard distances. And if you take a longer wider view, you can still use the lens F1.6 or 2 to get a really nice dreamy effect that can help to create some dreamlike land or city scapes.

I will be continuing to test and work with the lens and will be posting more soon of where it takes me .
